Dental Crown, Bridges and Veneers

Dental Crown and Bridges

Dental Crown, Bridges and Veneers

A dental crown, also known as dental cap, is used to replace the visible part of the tooth after the removal of large dental cavities, fractures, or a root canal. A dental crown is usually made of porcelain which will restore the original shape and esthetics of the tooth, while protecting it from further damage. Dental crowns are also used to restore dental implants.

A dental crown is used for a single tooth. On the other hand, dental bridges are generally used between at least two dental crowns to replace missing teeth, restoring function and esthetics.

Veneers are thin porcelain covers placed on the front of your teeth and they are placed to improve their appearance, with minimal reduction of your natural teeth.

Usually, this procedure will take two visits. During the first visit, the dentist will reshape the tooth to allow the crown or veneer to fit on top. Then, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth, which will be sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate the dental crown or veneer. Your dentist will make and place a temporary crown or veneer until the permanent one is ready to be inserted.

During the second visit, your dentist will remove the temporary crown or veneer and place the permanent one. Your dentist may need to make adjustments before permanently cementing it.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Who needs a dental crown, bridge or veneers?

Generally, you will need a dental crown, bridge or veneer if you have a tooth that has a cavity that is too large to restore with a filling, your tooth is cracked, your tooth had a root canal therapy or to improve esthetics.

How should I care for a new dental crown?

You can treat a dental crown just like a natural tooth. Brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. Your dentist will also evaluate the dental crown every 6 months during your periodic dental exam.

Will I need a root canal if I get a crown?

No, not all teeth that get crowns need to have a root canal. Normally if a root canal is needed, the root canal should be completed before a crown is permanently placed on the tooth.
