The purpose of a dental cleaning is to prevent the development of gingivitis, periodontitis, or caries, by the removal of plaque, tartar, and stain from your teeth.
During the dental cleaning our dental hygienist will use an ultrasonic instrument along with handheld instruments to remove plaque and tartar from between your teeth and around the gumline. Then, your teeth will be polished to remove any stain and soft plaque remaining.
Your dental hygienist will also develop an oral hygiene plan, tailored to your needs and lifestyle, to help you succeed in your dental hygiene daily routine. This plan will include brushing and flossing techniques, the best toothpaste and mouthwash for your needs, different aids to clean between your teeth and frequency of dental cleanings.
Main objectives of dental cleanings
All children and adults are recommended to get a dental cleaning at least every 6 months.
A dental cleaning will likely take around an hour. During this appointment you may also have an examination, fluoride application and radiographs taken.
